How to get your nonprofit ready for a capital campaign.

Feeling like it’s time to launch a capital campaign for your organization? Congrats—and don’t be scared! Capital campaigns (or concerted, intense efforts to raise a significant amount of money over a defined period of time) can certainly be intimidating, but they don’t have to be. No matter how big or small your campaign will be, here are some tips to make it a success.

Make sure your goal and objectives are clear

With your capital campaign, clarity is key. Make sure your donors know why you need them to give, howmuch you need them to give, and what the fundraising is for. Be as specific as possible to get your donors motivated and excited to support your cause.

Loop in everyone who’s relevant

Be sure you share your vision—and the details of the campaign—with everyone involved: stakeholders, community members, board members, donors, and your team. Your staff should be well-trained so they can understand both the process of the campaign and the ultimate goal.

Plan in advance

Don’t try to throw a capital campaign together overnight! Instead, begin planning as early as possible, creating a timeline for your processes and mapping out all your specific objectives along the way. Spreadsheets are your friend here. So are calendars.

Finally, have fun with it!

Yes, it can be stressful launching a capital campaign, but when done with care and passion (and plenty of advance notice), both the process and results can be incredibly rewarding.
