Pope Francis Passing: A Message of Hope and Resurrection

 Hope and Resurrection

Pastoral Notes for the 3rd Sunday of Easter, May 4, 2025, Year C

These days have been emotional for so many. Pope Francis, the “People’s Pope,” passed to the “house of the Father” just hours after visiting the crowds in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. We are reminded of two important realities. First, physical death comes to us all, even to the beloved Pope. Second, Jesus is truly risen and has defeated death and sin so that we, too, are welcome to the “house of the Father!” This gives us the hope that, despite our own failings, we shall be welcome to the “house of the Father” when we pass from this life. The Holy Father Francis has given us his own example of this hope during the Holy Year of Hope!

Today’s gospel reading affirms this hope when Peter encounters Jesus on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Having denied Jesus three times before the crucifixion, Peter now confirms his love for Jesus and receives the mission to “feed my (Christ’s) sheep.” With what shall Peter feed Christ’s sheep? The truth of Jesus’ resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit. Peter was to confirm the faith of his brother Apostles, and Peter’s successors have had that same mission throughout the centuries.

Call to Action

Let us continue to pray for the repose of the soul of our Holy Father, Francis. Additionally, as a parish, let us pray for the unity of the Church and that the Cardinal Electors will be guided by the Holy Spirit in selecting the next Pope.

  • Use your GC Smart Text to send your parishioners reminders during the week to continue the prayers begun in this weekend’s liturgies.
  • Mother’s Day is May 11th this year. If you haven’t prepared yet, now is the time! It’s another great opportunity to welcome guests and visitors. Have your Smart Text phone number ready, your QR Codes, and your GC SmartStickers available for all.
  • The public nature of the mourning for Pope Francis may evoke continued bereavement for the loss of other loved ones for those who have lost a spouse, child, sibling, or dear friend. Be sensitive to their needs and available for their support.

Religious Formation Ideas

  1. The passing of Pope Francis has called the attention of the world, and the media of all sorts are saturated with information and opinions. Take this opportunity to teach both children and adults in their Religious Formation about the nature of the Church, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the role of the Pope in the Church.
  2. Take some time as a family to pray for the repose of the Holy Father’s soul and for the good of the next Pope, whoever he may be.
  3. Use the media attention to teach the children that they are a part of a worldwide communion as Catholics and that the Church has a worldwide mission to proclaim the love of God and the Resurrection of the Lord!
