Pope Francis kept almost nothing for himself. I say “almost nothing” because they found he had about $100 in his personal banking account at his passing. That was the sum total of his personal possessions. It probably doesn’t shock us to learn this because we grew accustomed to his simplicity and spontaneity, quick humor, and natural demeanor with everyone. I recall a photo of the Pope giving a major speech when a small child had run up onto the dias from which he was speaking. The Pope took the child by the hand and continued the speech as if it were normal. And the truth is, it was normal! It was human. It was simple. It was real. I sense that many are mourning his passing from us. Some are people of faith, and some are not. In a world filled with falsehoods and unrealistic expectations, perhaps his final lesson for each of us is simply to be real. Be human. Be natural.
