Father's Day Special 2024

Father’s Day Special 2024

As much as we like to think we are in control, we are not in control! The farmer who sows the seed cannot make it grow. His job is to plant the seed and provide the right conditions for its growth – that’s all he can do. The rest is a mystery to him, for the seed germinates and grows according to the order which God has given it. The mustard plant, which grows wild to this day on the hillsides of Galilee, cannot be controlled. It grows where it will, and it provides shade and safe harbor to the birds of the air. Through these and other parables Jesus is using imagery that would have been very familiar to his audience, for they were farmers and fishermen, shepherds, and simple tradesmen. And he is showing them something: the Kingdom of God is everywhere; we cannot control it. However, we can and should do our bit to allow the Kingdom to grow! We must plant the seed or cast the net. We must observe the wildflower or build on solid ground. God will do the rest! Do you trust that? Do you believe that? Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Christ’s faithful must do their part to prepare for the Kingdom of God, but they must trust that once they’ve done their part God will work His way! That’s called faith.

Though the summer months are “quieter” around the parish or school it remains a time for preparation, just as the farmer must prepare the ground to sow the seed, or the fisherman must cast the net. This is the time for parishioners to continue inviting friends, neighbors, other family members, even just acquaintances to come join them at church, or attend the parish picnic, or send their kids to Vacation Bible School, or whatever! Being invitational is our part, but touching the heart of another with the gift of faith is God’s part over which we have no control. The word “evangelization” sounds heavy and fearful to many of our people, but it’s really about being “invitational.” Our part is to say, “come and see,” and God’s part is to work the mystery of faith in the heart of each person. But if you don’t cast the net, you will not catch a fish. And if you do not plant a seed, you will not harvest in the fall. Give Central is all about you growing your congregation, growing your participation, and helping people see the Kingdom of God alive in their world!
